The fundamental actions necessary for basic dental health care include brushing at least once a day, flossing at least once a day and getting the teeth cleaned by a dental professional at least once a year. Dr. Maddahi actually recommends flossing twice a day.
When surveyed one quarter of the adults surveyed admitted that they do not feel their current oral health care routine is satisfactory. They acknowledge that they feel that it could be improved. Three-quarters of those surveyed said it is important to include cleaning between the teeth, yet forty-six percent felt that their routine is not successful in doing so.
Dr. Maddahi ensures that his patients understand the effect that bacteria and germs have on dental health. Unhandled dental disease has been known to contribute to certain ailments and has reportedly been found to shorten life expectancy.
When a person ignores such infection in the mouth, leading to infected root canals, gum disease, infected cavities and further disregarded oral disease, this may further lead to severe health situations. This form of neglect has been found to lead to chronic health trouble.
“Gum disease alone has been found to have increased the risk of heart attack, increased risk of stroke, raised the severity of diabetes, contributed to respiratory disease, interfered with proper digestion and can even contribute to low pre-term birth weights.”, Dr. Maddahi explains, “It has also been seen to play a role in osteoporosis, to severely stress the immune system and of course, lower resistance to other infections.”
Given that seventy-nine percent of adults said that it is very important that their oral health care routine remove bacteria and germs, it bears repeating that only half of the surveyed adults felt that their current oral health care routine is very effective at doing so.
Disregarded dental infections have been found by recent research and discovery to be closely linked to a multiplicity of health problems. When such disregard of gum disease allows it to develop into an advanced stage of the disease, which is known as periodontitis, stroke and heart disease have been found to result.
Bacterial pneumonia, high blood sugar levels, pancreatic cancer and even low birth weight as well as premature birth has been linked by researchers to disregarded periodontitis.
